Working in communications? Shouldn't you know the common antenna types by heart? Here's a summary to help you remember them!

Release date:2025-07-16Author source:KinghelmViews:55

By radiation pattern

Omnidirectional antennas: Radiate horizontally in 360°, gain of about 3–8 dBi; suitable for multi-directional coverage.

Directional antennas: Focus the signal within a beam width of about 30°–120°, gain ranges from 8–40 dBi; ideal for long-distance point-to-point communication.

By operating frequency

Low frequency (30 kHz–300 MHz): Strong diffraction but lower data rates.

RF frequency (300 MHz–300 GHz): Covers mainstream communication bands.

High frequency (above 300 GHz): Offers large bandwidth but suffers from rapid attenuation.

By structure and shape

Includes linear/rod antennas, planar antennas, array antennas, and microstrip antennas.
Each has its advantages—for example, microstrip antennas are compact and well-suited for small devices.

By application scenario

Base station antennas: Support multiple standards and wide-area coverage.

Satellite antennas: Require high gain and precise tracking.

IoT antennas, vehicle-mounted antennas, industrial antennas, etc.—each optimized for its application.
