Dr. Zhu Junshan
Human civilization thrives through the contributions of countless talents across generations. Among them is Dr. Zhu Junshan, a prominent figure in Shenzhen’s Huaqiangbei. Guided by scholarly ideals, Dr. Zhu dedicated himself to studying classics while applying knowledge pragmatically in business—transcending convention through responsibility and compassion. Alongside growing his company, he facilitated the migration of thousands from Guiyang County, Hunan, to Huaqiangbei. These individuals prospered in electronics, fueling the market’s vitality.
Dr. Zhu’s journey spans over four decades:
l 7–8 years as a civil servant in inland China;
l A decade at STMicroelectronics (Shenzhen);
l Roles at Guangdong Kelon Group, Guangdong Electronics Group, and Guangdong Yuejing Hi-Tech Co., Ltd.;
l Founding Shenzhen Dr. Zhu Electronics Technology Co., Ltd., successfully operating for 20+ years.
Renowned for his erudition and mentorship, Dr. Zhu is widely respected in the industry. Song Shiqiang of Kinghelm (www.kinghelm.net) and Slkor (www.slkoric.com) remarks:
"Dr. Zhu masterfully balances traditional scholarly integrity with commerce—a hidden sage in the city who refuses to bow to materialism. In Huaqiangbei, he shares joy without conformity, anchoring our restless society."
1. Serving Nation and Family
Dr. Zhu’s Hometown—Shuijiachong
Born in the 1960s into a farming family in Shuijiachong, Hunan, Dr. Zhu overcame poverty through relentless self-improvement. His father, Zhu Jinshu—a rare literate villager—instilled in him the values of lifelong learning. Dr. Zhu’s daughter, Zhu Hanqi, embraced this legacy: a Shanghai Jiao University master’s graduate, Duke University exchange scholar, and Microsoft China technical expert.

When asked about this enduring drive, Dr. Zhu reflects:
"First, my father’s cultural influence—a farmer who studied in a private school for eight years. Second, my pursuit of higher purpose beyond civil service, driving me toward a master’s and Ph.D. amid fierce competition. Third, my duty as a scholar: to honor my family and society through ceaseless learning."

Through self-education, Dr. Zhu advanced from Wuhan University to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Hebei University of Technology—transitioning from electrical engineering to semiconductor lithography and third-generation materials. Later, he founded his company to "transform knowledge into true freedom." His leadership inspired thousands from Guiyang to establish hundreds of electronics firms in Huaqiangbei, including Qingteng Tech, Myriad Tech, and Silicontron Electronics.
In 2012, he spearheaded a RMB 100,000 road-building project in Shuijiachong, donating RMB 70,000 personally. The village was revitalized within months—a feat he commemorated with poetry.

Despite his influence, Dr. Zhu holds few titles (e.g., Peking University Science Park mentor, IMAPS member). As he states in his book The Watchkeeper:
"Since arriving in Shenzhen in 1992, I’ve preserved my independence. At SEG Group, I volunteered for STMicroelectronics—a low-paying, demanding role—because serving my country mattered most."

In 2007, Dr. Zhu founded Shenzhen Sino-Italian-French Electronics Co., Ltd. (renamed Shenzhen Dr. Zhu Electronics Technology Co., Ltd. in 2024). Known industry-wide for authentic components, "Dr. Zhu" became synonymous with reliability. Media describe him as "a scholar among merchants, a merchant among scholars, and a cultivator among both."
His philosophy echoes in his autobiography:
"Zeng Guofan’s father wrote: ‘With descendants and fields, our heritage blends farming and study… Unburdened by office, I entrust hardships to future generations.’ Though centuries apart, my mindset aligns—detached yet diligent, content beyond wealth."
Dr. Zhu’s business ethos transcends profit:
"After 20 years, my company thrives stably. Money represents value, not obsession. I see myself as a steward—not a boss—prioritizing spiritual freedom: financial independence, time autonomy, physical wellness, and intellectual liberty."

On reading, Dr. Zhu emphasizes:
"It’s habitual—nourishment for the soul. Most tend to their bodies; few nurture their spirits. Books are paintings with words; paintings are silent books. ‘Wordless books’ require exploring the world—I’ve visited historic and natural sites across a dozen countries. Reading elevates perspective, connects past to future, and dialogues with great minds. As Confucius taught: ‘A calf born of plow oxen, if worthy, will be used by heaven.’"
Dr. Zhu at Jiuyi Mountain, Hunan
A true polymath, Dr. Zhu studies astronomy, literature, mathematics, and art—mastering English/Japanese for 20+ years while maintaining handwritten notes on philosophy, history, and medicine. His library spans The Complete Works of Zeng Guofan, The Four Books and Five Classics, A Brief History of Time, and The Art of War. He hosts book-sharing events, believing:
"Progress in others brings profound fulfillment."
Dr. Zhu Discussing Philosophy

Dr. Zhu maintains a "watchkeeper’s distance" from society and commerce:
"To watchkeep is mutual freedom and fulfillment. I cherish my world yet engage wisely: loving life despite its truths; rejecting labels with compassion; treasuring connections while thriving in solitude."
His lifestyle reflects simplicity:
l Ph.D. years: Dinner was two steamed buns, eaten en route to late-night work.
l Entrepreneurship: Modest living despite success—no luxury cars, Huaqiangbei fast meals.
l Personal routine: Days of rice with pickles, enjoyed as liberation.
l Gatherings: Noodles with friends, discussing knowledge—never salaries.
He embraces wu-wei (non-forcing action):
"My pursuits—and inner peace—are possible thanks to others: my loyal brother Zhu Baoshan; my wife Hou Yunxiang, whom my mother adored; my accomplished daughter Zhu Hanqi; and my team, especially VP Xia Xiaofang. Their dedication lets me roam freely as a thinker."
Dr. Zhu
Epilogue
The Great Way is simple, governed by non-action;
The Great Way is never lonely—virtue attains company.
Kinghelm and Slkor’s Song Shiqiang wishes Dr. Zhu’s discipline and altruism "illuminate wisdom’s path for all." May the hundreds of electronics firms founded by Huaqiangbei’s pioneers flourish under his inspiration. May our nation prosper, people thrive, and the motherland endure!
