Automotive OBD Products and Application Scenarios

 

In the era of the Internet of Everything, with the continuous emergence of products like intelligent connected vehicles, OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) is the key component enabling the interaction between a vehicle's operational data and the outside world. It is crucial for ensuring driving safety and in processes like maintenance and repair. The working principle of automotive OBD primarily involves collecting various data through sensors distributed throughout the vehicle, transmitting this data to the vehicle's electronic heart, the ECU (Electronic Control Unit), for processing, analysis, and decision-making. Information is then fed back to the driver and owner via fault codes or indicator lights. The main functions of automotive OBD include data collection, data analysis and judgment, fault code generation and storage, fault indication and feedback, exhaust emission monitoring, and wireless signal transmission for hazardous conditions. Song Shiqiang from Kinghelm and Slkor introduced that on-board OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) can be applied to both passenger cars and commercial vehicles, representing a very large market capacity. The core function of OBD (On-Board Diagnostics System) is to achieve fault diagnosis, emission control, and performance optimization by real-time monitoring of the status of key vehicle components. The hardware of automotive OBD mainly consists of the Electronic Control Unit (ECU), sensors, actuators, malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), and diagnostic tools. Wireless signal transmission for automotive OBD is typically achieved using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi technology. The transmission process is mainly as follows:

Bluetooth Transmission:

1. After an OBD with Bluetooth communication capability is powered on, it enters a discoverable state.

2. The vehicle owner uses a mobile phone or other terminal device to find the corresponding OBD device and pairs/connects to it, establishing a Bluetooth communication link.

3. Data Transmission: The OBD device packages the real-time data obtained from the vehicle's ECU (such as engine speed, coolant temperature, etc.) into data packets of a specific format and transmits them via Bluetooth signals according to the agreed communication protocol.

4. The mobile phone or other terminal device receives the signal, parses the data packet, and then displays the data in an application for the owner or maintenance personnel to view and access.

Wi-Fi Transmission:

1. Network Setup: The Wi-Fi module inside the OBD can create a small Wi-Fi hotspot. The vehicle owner connects their mobile phone or other terminal device to this hotspot and sets up the communication frequency to establish a Wi-Fi connection.

2. The OBD encapsulates the vehicle data according to specific network protocols and transmits it via Wi-Fi signals to the connected terminal device.

3. The terminal device receives the data, which is then processed and displayed by the corresponding application.

4. Simultaneously, the terminal device can also send commands to the OBD device, such as requesting specific types of data or configuring certain functions, enabling bidirectional data interaction.

Song Shiqiang explained that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signal transmission each have their advantages and disadvantages. Bluetooth transmission has lower power consumption and simpler connection, but its transmission distance is limited, generally exceeding 15 meters. The Bluetooth module establishes an interaction channel with the user's mobile APP, fully supporting functions like key management, device authentication, and vehicle control, providing users with a convenient smart car experience. Wi-Fi transmission offers faster speed and a longer transmission distance, up to 300 meters at best, but consumes higher power and has a more complex setup process. Functionally, both are similar. These devices are used in conjunction with onboard GPS/BDS Beidou system navigation and positioning products, adding features like historical track playback, electronic fence, and one-key emergency shutdown.
