Why Choose Omnidirectional Fiberglass Antennas on Ships?

Release date:2025-07-19Author source:KinghelmViews:257

When setting up radio communication systems on ships, multiple antennas are required, such as satellite receiving antennas, GPS positioning antennas, and VHF maritime walkie-talkie transceivers. Most of these antennas use omnidirectional fiberglass antennas. Why is this the case? What are their characteristics? Let’s talk about omnidirectional fiberglass antennas today.

First, what is an omnidirectional antenna, and what about the vertical angle?

In radio antenna systems, an omnidirectional antenna refers to one that radiates 360 degrees horizontally. Vertically, the radiation forms a fan-shaped beam with an angle usually around 6 to 15 degrees. The higher the gain, the narrower the vertical angle. For example, a 9 dB antenna typically has a vertical radiation angle of about 14 degrees, while fiberglass antennas can achieve about 8 degrees, which is close to the limit. Because of the narrow vertical angle, fiberglass antennas are widely used for wireless coverage over open seas and flat plains. Mounted high, such as on a ship’s mast, they can transmit signals further, achieving greater communication distances.

Second, why are fiberglass antennas unsuitable for indoor use but ideal for outdoor spaces like ships?

Many people may notice that most antennas are rated 2 dB, 5 dB, or 7 dB, and it is rare to see indoor antennas with gains of 9 dB or higher. Generally, a 7 dB antenna is sufficient for indoor use. Antennas with gain above 7 dB have narrower angles, which makes them less effective indoors and may even have a negative effect. Therefore, omnidirectional antennas with gain above 9 dB are strongly recommended for outdoor use. Also, the claim that high-gain antennas have better wall-penetration indoors is not supported by evidence and should not be trusted too much. Furthermore, the fiberglass material of the antenna makes it resistant to rain corrosion and very durable. This environment requirement for maritime walkie-talkies makes fiberglass antennas the necessary choice.
