Chinese New Year: A Tapestry of Traditions and Flavors

The Best Essay Award winner, “Chen Suwei of Kinghelm: A 2026 Year of the Horse Homecoming — Shicheng Has Changed,” unfolds as a heartfelt homecoming narrative. After experiencing it firsthand, the author reflects: “The Spring Festival in Shicheng in 2026 feels richer in tradition and more diverse in activities. Authentic Hakka customs are preserved in their original form, while many modern elements have been integrated, allowing people of all ages to find their own joy.” More importantly, Chen’s journey through Shicheng showcases the remarkable achievements of China’s rural greening, beautification, and illumination initiatives. What begins as a story of family happiness rises to the level of national strategy—marked by vision, depth, and perspective. Through an ordinary lens, the rural narrative feels pure and natural, closely aligned with the pulse of the times and the warmth of people’s livelihoods: the well-being of the people remains the nation’s foremost priority.

In “Shen Qian of Kinghelm: Among Countless New Year Traditions, I Miss Wugang Most,” the author goes beyond common customs to explore their origins:
“As a child, I never understood why we had to wake so early. Later I learned that during the Ming dynasty’s anti-invasion campaigns and the War of Resistance, soldiers from Hunan assembled at dawn on the first day of the New Year. Families prepared meals overnight so they wouldn’t march on empty stomachs. This ‘farewell feast’ became a tradition to honor those who defended the country.”
“Chen Haifeng of Kinghelm: Warm Winters in Lingnan—Human Connection and Everyday Life” reflects on the slow pace and deepening festive atmosphere of returning home. The 1,700-year-old Lingnan village culture comes alive through daily life, carrying memories of hometown dialects and traditions. As written: “Seeing the lively village and the smiles of family, I suddenly understood—no matter how hard life is outside, home is always the safest harbor.”

“Li Hualan of Kinghelm: Rong County, Guangxi—Pomelo Fragrance and Timeless Cuisine” notes how local flavors travel across oceans: “Dishes like Xiushan braised pork and Shatian pomelo tea have reached the world through overseas communities, becoming tastes of home for those far away.” These flavors carry not just nostalgia, but profound emotional ties to both family and country.
