What is the significance of the rated voltage of a connector?

The rated voltage of a connector refers to the maximum voltage value that the manufacturer guarantees the connector can safely operate under for long-term use.
It mainly determines two key aspects:
1. Whether insulation breakdown will occur
If the voltage exceeds the rated value, it may break down the insulation of the housing or between terminals, leading to short circuits, arcing, or leakage current.
2. Whether creepage distance and electrical clearance are sufficient
A higher rated voltage requires safer structural design, including larger pin spacing and sufficient creepage and clearance distances, to prevent electrical arcing under high voltage conditions.
