What is a Medium-High Frequency Shortwave Antenna?

2026-04-24 134

The primary propagation mechanism for medium-high frequency (MF/HF) shortwave communication is groundwave propagation. Groundwaves travel along the Earth's surface, and their propagation distance depends on the properties of the surface medium. The electrical conductivity of the sea surface is most favorable for radio wave propagation, allowing shortwave groundwave signals to travel approximately 1,000 kilometers over the ocean. On land, the conductivity is poorer, leading to greater signal attenuation, and different types of terrain have varying levels of signal loss (moist soil causes less attenuation, while dry sandy or rocky ground causes more). Over land, shortwave groundwave signals typically propagate only a few tens of kilometers. Unlike skywave propagation, groundwave transmission does not require frequent frequency adjustments, but obstacles along the path must be considered.

Antennas in the medium-high frequency range generally range in size from 2.5 meters to 250 meters. Considering performance and cost, MF/HF shortwave antennas are usually vertical radiating dipoles, with a height approximately 1/6 to 5/8 of the wavelength. Antenna towers can range from 30 meters to over 100 meters tall.

Medium-high frequency shortwave communication is mainly used in medium-wave broadcasting systems, such as standard AM radio broadcasting.
