How to determine whether weak antenna signals are caused by the antenna or the connector?

2026-05-08 432

Quick localization can be achieved through a combination of “replacement testing + simple inspection”, prioritizing the exclusion of connector issues before verifying antenna faults.

Replace with the same-spec connector:
Directly replace the existing antenna connector (including receptacle + cable assembly) with a new, matching model. If the signal is restored, the original connector likely has poor contact, corrosion, or impedance mismatch.

Inspect connector appearance and connection:
Before replacement, check whether the connector is loose, terminals are oxidized or deformed, or if there are foreign objects. Also verify insertion firmness. If tightening the connector temporarily improves the signal, the issue is most likely a connector contact problem.

Cross-test the antenna:
Connect the suspect antenna to a known working device, and a known good antenna to the faulty device.
If the suspect antenna still shows weak signals on the good device → antenna fault.
If the known good antenna works normally on the faulty device → original device’s connector issue.

Use simple tools for auxiliary testing:
Measure pin continuity of the connector with a multimeter. Open circuit → connector damaged.
Use a VSWR meter to test impedance matching. If replacing the connector brings VSWR back to near 1, the problem is confirmed to be the connector.
