Why Are Some Center Conductors Solid and Others Stranded?

2026-04-24 341

In simple terms, the choice between solid and stranded conductors is a trade-off between flexibility and electrical performance.

Core Differences:

Solid Conductor

Advantages: Simple structure and low cost. At high frequencies, signals mainly travel along the surface (skin effect), and the smooth, continuous surface of a solid conductor provides better high-frequency performance with lower loss.

Disadvantages: Poor flexibility and difficult to bend. Repeated bending can cause breakage, making it unsuitable for applications requiring frequent movement or small-radius bends.

Stranded Conductor

Advantages: Made of multiple fine wires twisted together, very flexible and resistant to bending. Ideal for complex routing or frequently moving scenarios (e.g., robotic arms, test probes).

Disadvantages: The twisted structure has a less smooth surface, so the skin effect at high frequencies can cause slightly higher transmission loss compared to solid conductors. Manufacturing costs are also higher.

selection Recommendations:

Solid: Use when the cable is mainly fixed and laid in straight lines, and high-frequency performance is critical (e.g., feeder lines inside communication base stations).

Stranded: Use when the cable needs frequent bending, movement, or flexible routing in confined spaces (e.g., internal device wiring, automotive harnesses).
