Chen Ling, Finance at Kinghelm Electronics
The 26th day of the twelfth lunar month is considered an auspicious day for moving into a new home. Choosing this time to relocate reflects the old tradition of “bidding farewell to the old and welcoming the new”—sweeping away a year’s dust in the old house and embracing the dawn of the New Year in a new one.
My mother prepared traditional items such as a zengzi (a steaming utensil from our hometown), firewood, rice, oil, and salt. We also brought along pots and bowls, apples, dragon fruit, a ladder, and fire.
At midnight, as the clock struck twelve, my father stepped into the new house carrying a blazing flame, saying that life would flourish with prosperity. Then my mother followed, holding rice, gold ingots, and red envelopes, saying “may wealth roll in,” as she entered.
Behind them came many elders, siblings, and relatives, each carrying different items and offering blessings aloud. Some said “step by step to success,” others said “peace and safety,” “abundant wealth,” and “may everything go as you wish.”
The elders’ faces were filled with smiles—like warm sunshine in winter, full of joy and comfort. The younger ones chirped excitedly like cheerful birds, bringing even more energy to the lively scene. Everyone entered in order, carefully placing their items, each action carrying hopes for a better new life.
Inside the house, laughter echoed continuously. Outside, colorful fireworks lit up the night sky—some like shooting stars, others like blooming flowers—turning the sky into a dreamlike display. Inside, illuminated by lights and fireworks, the family’s smiling faces appeared especially warm. Sitting together, sharing the joy of moving and hopes for the New Year, our laughter intertwined into a heartwarming symphony of New Year spirit.
A New Year, A New Home!
On the first night in the new home, I lay quietly in bed. Under the soft yellow light, I looked at my child sleeping peacefully, my heart filled with happiness. I recalled the ancient phrase “moving to a better place like birds to a valley,” and thought of it as “swallows returning to celebrate”—as their return coincides with the arrival of spring.
Soon, dawn arrived. Sunlight filtered gently through the window and spread across the floor. The children laughed and played in the new house, and I felt warmth and ease both physically and mentally, as if all the fatigue of the past year had completely disappeared.
Bright Windows, A Fresh Start of Happiness
On New Year’s Eve, my husband and I cooked together. We prepared dishes such as fish, chicken, and beef. Looking at the table full of delicious food and seeing the whole family eating happily, I felt a deep sense of accomplishment.
When Family Is Together, Every Bite Tastes Like Home
That evening, as we stayed up to welcome the New Year, the children gathered to play games, while the adults sat together chatting—sharing memories of the past year and hopes for the next. My mother, knowing how tired I was from cooking, kindly prepared late-night snacks and helped take care of the children.
In this warm atmosphere, I deeply felt that home is the place that, no matter how far you go, always draws your heart back.
On the first day of the Lunar New Year, the sunshine was especially bright, as if adding joy to the new year and the new home. We woke up early, put on new clothes, and paid New Year visits to our elders. They smiled as they gave us red envelopes, wishing us a smooth and healthy year ahead. The children, excited with their red envelopes, ran around the house joyfully.
Later, our family went to the park. It was decorated with festive lights and filled with laughter everywhere. People wore happy smiles on their faces. We strolled along the pathways, enjoying the beautiful scenery and the festive atmosphere. At noon, we found a nearby restaurant to dine, enjoying delicious food while talking about our plans and hopes for the new year. In that warm moment, I deeply felt how beautiful life is—and that this new home marks the beginning of our happiness.
