Kinghelm MCX Connector KH-MCX-PBS: The Silent Bridge of Miniature Signals

2025-11-28 437

In the field of radio frequency communication, coaxial connectors serve as invisible yet critical bridges that carry high-frequency signals with minimal loss. Among them, the KH-MCX-PBS, a push-on MCX female through-hole PCB mount connector, has earned its place in countless compact designs thanks to its reasonable size and consistent electrical behavior. Manufactured by the Kinghelm brand under model number KH-MCX-PBS, it is supplied in simple bag packaging with a net weight of only 1.66 grams, making storage, transportation, and assembly highly convenient.

The MCX connector family emerged in the 1990s to meet the growing demand for miniaturization while supporting frequencies up to 6 GHz. Distinguished by its snap-on (push-pull) locking mechanism, it allows faster mating and unmating than threaded SMA connectors while maintaining adequate mechanical retention. The KH-MCX-PBS is specifically optimized for board-level applications. Its through-hole “broken-board” structure enables the connector body to pass directly through the PCB, with the center pin and ground legs soldered on the opposite side. This configuration shortens the signal path, reduces parasitic effects, and proves especially valuable when internal space is limited, such as in wireless modules, antenna feeds, or densely packed RF front-ends.

Electrically, the KH-MCX-PBS offers an insulation resistance of 1000 MΩ, indicating robust isolation between inner and outer conductors even under varying humidity. Contact resistance is kept low at 5 mΩ for the center conductor and 2.5 mΩ for the outer shield, minimizing insertion loss and heat generation in 50 Ω systems. The connector withstands AC 500 V without breakdown, providing a safety margin against voltage spikes commonly found in automotive or industrial environments. Operating temperature spans from −40 °C to +90 °C, allowing deployment from frigid outdoor installations to moderately warm enclosed electronics.

Kinghelm constructs the KH-MCX-PBS with gold-plated brass contacts and PTFE dielectric made of PTFE, a combination that resists corrosion and maintains performance through repeated thermal cycles and vibration. Typical applications include GPS receivers, 5G small-cell RF boards, drone video/downlink modules, medical ultrasound probes, spectrum analyzers, and even wearable devices where antenna connection must remain reliable yet occupy minimal volume.

The through-hole design simplifies automated assembly: the PCB requires only a central hole of approximately 0.9 mm plus surrounding ground pads. After insertion, wave or reflow soldering secures the connector permanently. The low profile (usually just a few millimeters above the board) facilitates stacking or placement near other components. Kinghelm supplies recommended PCB footprints compatible with popular EDA tools such as Altium Designer and KiCad. Once mounted, return loss and insertion loss remain favorable up to 3–6 GHz, with typical values below 0.2 dB across the lower portion of the band.

Compared to similar interfaces, the KH-MCX-PBS strikes a practical balance. It is larger than MMCX (which sacrifices retention force) but considerably smaller than SMB or SMA, making it a frequent choice when frequency requirements stay below 6 GHz and board space is at a premium. Mating cycles exceed 500 cycles with proper handling, and the push-on mechanism avoids torque-related damage common with threaded types.

Looking ahead, although millimeter-wave applications are gradually shifting toward 2.92 mm, 2.4 mm, or 1.85 mm connectors, the MCX family, including models like KH-MCX-PBS, continues to serve the vast mid-frequency ecosystem of IoT devices, sub-6 GHz 5G modules, Wi-Fi 6/7 front-ends, and industrial sensors. Kinghelm maintains stable production and full compliance with IEC 61169-52, ensuring drop-in compatibility with cables and adapters from other manufacturers.
