What Are the Functions of the Shielding Layer in a Coaxial Cable?

2026-04-24 326

The shielding layer serves multiple purposes:

1. Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and RF Interference Protection:
It shields the cable from external electromagnetic and radio frequency interference, preventing outside signals from coupling into the cable and causing disruptions.

2. Signal Containment:
It prevents the signals transmitted within the cable from leaking out.

Materials:
Shielding can be made from various materials, such as metal braided aluminum foil, copper foil, or copper wires.

Cable Jacket:
The jacket primarily protects the cable as a whole against external physical and environmental damage, including impact, corrosion, water, and UV exposure. Standard cable jackets are usually made of PVC or PE, while high-end cables use PTFE. Outdoor cables often require UV resistance, and high-temperature applications may demand specialized shielding structures.

Shielding Structure:
Most coaxial cables use a braided copper mesh, where multiple strands are woven in a cross pattern to fully cover the insulation layer, forming a protective mesh.

Advanced Requirements:
For higher flexibility or higher-frequency applications, shielding materials and structures are enhanced, such as double-layer braided copper, threaded copper tubes, or multiple layers of copper mesh combined with aluminum foil for repeated wrapping.
