What is a Low-Frequency Long-Wave Antenna?

2026-04-24 212

A low-frequency long-wave antenna refers to antennas designed for communication in the extremely low frequency (ELF) band of the radio spectrum, which ranges from 10 kHz to 500 kHz. This frequency band is known for its low attenuation and highly stable transmission characteristics, making it indispensable in certain communication fields.

The primary propagation mechanism of ELF electromagnetic waves is through skywave propagation. When signals are transmitted from the antenna, they are reflected back to the ground by the ionosphere and then reflected back to the ionosphere by the Earth's surface. This process can repeat multiple times, allowing the signals to travel great distances (hundreds to thousands of kilometers) without being obstructed by ground obstacles. For example, this type of propagation is used in maritime and aviation navigation and communication systems.

ELF waves propagate within the Earth-ionosphere waveguide, and the attenuation is as low as 0.23 dB per kilometer, preventing interference. Despite the large land area and massive, costly transmitting units and supporting equipment required for ELF transmission systems, the use of ELF-based navigation and communication equipment continues to increase. The most commonly used antenna type for ELF communication is the base-insulated monopole antenna, which radiates an omnidirectional electromagnetic field with vertical polarization.
